Homeless

This term my whole research will be looking at the homeless and poor... Because they dress for comfort and nothing else... Alot of baggy oversized clothing, layering and hoods for protection, torn well-used and loose.. soft dull colours etc. etc....

We had an assigment during the Christmas break which totally cut my holidays short and forced me to do some drawings for my research...

Doing this project has forced me to look at such painful photos and I have walked around the streets noticing how many homeless people there are in the heart of London itself. I wish I had the courage to walk up to them and ask them what is their story... Sometimes I feel I'm in no position to give out money because technically they're my parents' money... Thus I am another selfish passerby like everyone else that cast unhelpful sympathy glances for 2 seconds and walk away because we always have somewhere to rush to and something to do.

Things have been so rough the past few weeks that i almost went mad not getting enough sleep... Thankfully term 1 has just finished... and I can start blogging again..

Here are just some images of my portfolio work from last year, that I brought for my interview to get onto my current BA course.

The project was called 'opposites and contrasts'... so basically I had a vision of beautiful things.. like innocence, against anorexia and self inflicted pain, natural against man-made, traditional against modern, stuff like that. But the one i really liked was the innocence and ballerina against anorexia and blood and anger. I thought that was my strongest theme and really helped boost my project.

This is some fabric manipulation work we had to do in Textile class... It was kind of scary but fitted perfectly for my project. It was supposed to depict blood and intestines just dripping out from a perfectly beautiful immaculate skin.

More design work... I can't imagine how much effort i put into these sheets last year. I practically slaved over them!

A very feminine look that I'm not sure I'll wear again but I loved the colour on the dress that I had to wear it... The dress was from a charity shop that costed me 2 pounds!!!!!! Yessss I love it when i find cheap things my size.

One of my favourite looks so far... I matched an oversized blazer with printed chiffon dress and belted them.

I love this photo because my legs look longer than they actually are in real life sigh...

The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman. Photos of amazing streetstyles page after page... my source of inspiration and the only textbook i'll ever need for the rest of my life! I have a knack for exaggerating but this time Im probably not!!!

I got it from Amazon at a reduced price and I waited in my flat whole day for the delivery... Did not want to wait for rescheduling delivery and I had to see that book!!! The best buy I made in a long time!

DIY Ripped Pants and Farewell

My holidays passed by so fast I have to cramp two posts in one!

First off I'm very excited about my new ripped pants that's giving me one thing to look forward to when I leave for London tomorrow morning. I didn't dare wear it here but I'm pretty certain to wear it to college in London.

Here's how I ripped my black pants that made my father cringe in disgust:

I got my pants and marked the rips with chalk. I wanted to make both sides symmetrical.

Small but extremly sharp scissors to make precise cuts for the shape of my rips. Some are long and deep... some are short and thin.

I used a cheese grater to fray the threads and pulled them out until it looked the way I wanted it to. I also used a seam ripped to make forced rips so it looked more 'worn and torn'.

After approximately 3 hours...

My ripped pants!

It turned out exactly the way I wanted it... except now I have to be careful how Im going to wash it because if that gets into the washing machine Im afraid I'll be showing more skin than I initially intended to.

I can't believe I'm leaving for London tomorrow already =(

I'm going to miss all the good times I had with my friends =(

If only I could pack them all to London with me HAHA xD

Thanks for all the fun outings in the last 3 months! I'll always be looking forward to coming home because of you guys.

My Very Own Batwing Dress

I saw a similar design in a store one day and it was super expensive then I looked at it and thought I could actually make this myself because it didn't require much pattern cutting work and I had the exact fabric...

A rough sketch of the design and the 2/5 scaled pattern used to make the dress.

Some thing I did for fun on Photoshop. I actually just wanted to colour the dress in black but I ended up having fun with the background and stuff.

Anddd........ Wallah!

I matched it with a white belt and long pearly necklace which I wish i didn't that day because when I came back I realised the dress looked quite good on its own instead of with the belt.

This is how the sleeves look like. Although I swear if you look closely enough my hemming around the sleeves and neckline are horrible because I got no Overlocking machine... Thank goodness this dress is purely black and not so obvious :|

Sketchbook Drawings

I've been sewing almost everyday lately.. I bought this cheap oversized pencil skirt and altered it to fit myself. It's got a nice denim look so I'll wear it one of these days and post it up.

I've also made a batwing dress... Which took up most of my time the past few days. It's my second 'wearable dress' i've ever made so far (that sounds pretty sad).

What I've also been doing everyday is drawing in my little o Sketchbook...

A page full of Fashion sketches and collage work....

I like my sketchbook to be messy and rough yet full of emotitions. When I find a page too white or too 'proper' I deliberately take wet paint and spoil it.

I also hate straight lines... Explains why i don't use rulers except for technical drawings... and why sometimes i like to tear pictures with my bare hands instead of using a pair of scissors.

Enjoying the Sun while I Can

A couple of simple outfits I wore during hot sunny days... No more of these once I go back London in 3 weeks!!!

Green tank top from Bershka. I like it because of the printed layers at the hemline.

Long white shirt tied at waist also from Bershka. Im really beginning to love that shop.

And my favourite blazer look matched with casual pieces.

My bf took these amazing photos. I have to mention this here or he'll think I'm taking him for granted haha.

Gonna miss him once I go back London... =(

Because Someone's Angry...

My Bf was angry with me last night and I drew these comics out on impulse. I haven't been drawing comics for such a long time I almost miss it. This time instead of hand writting the talk bubbles... Photoshop helped enhance my amatuer looking comic strips...

It's not supposed to make much sense but probably intended to soften my bf a little so he won't be so mad at me no more haha x)

Sketchbook

While visiting Venice last year, I took the opportunity to do my very own painting of Venice like the ones you always see in the art shops and stuff. The difference is The art shops used proper canvas, oil or probably acrylic paints, air brushing maybe and fixatives... I on the other hand, did my amateur painting on my little reliable sketchbook using a Sharpie art pen, water colours and bits of cheap pastels.

The hardest part for me were the freaking windows you see on the right side. I hate using rulers when I draw... I always wanted to draw straight lines using my free hand to make a drawing more expressive rather than so erm... set in stone. So you can see why my windows look so irregular.

I had fun painting the water most!

I did this in my sketchbook too... using just Charcoal and my fingers to smear.

Multiple Outfits

Since I haven't been updating much and been going out and travelling so much more... This is a post with three of my recent outfits...

An outfit I wore on a trip to Singapore. Green printed summer dress, made of very light cotton and adjustable length because of the elastic band around the skirt. I could use it as a shirt too but have yet to try that out.

A black and white striped body-con dress that I paired with a cheap black shirt from a Charity Store in London. Gladiator Sandals also from London.

My favourite nude colour dress. I decided to wear my shoes a bit differently this time instead of flats and sandals since my dress was already not too flashy. I actually really miss wearing boots since I arrived back home.

Coco Chanel

Last night my bf and I watched a movie "Coco Chanel". Obviously, the movie is about the life of the legendary fashion designer Chanel but I never expected it to turn out so good and addictive. This is one movie where I actually wanted to listen to every single word and understand what was happening and who the characters were.

The filming of the movie was done very artistically in my opinion... and the actresses Barbora Bobulova and Shirley MacLaine played their roles as Coco Chanel very well.

I truly thought Barbora Bobulova was stunning in the movie! She has this flawless natural beauty and witty personality in the movie that I couldn't imagine any other actress to have played the part better.

My favourite part where Chanel was trying desperately to get on the horse and saw the boy at the stables and told him to take off his pants so she could wear them.

Honestly one of the best movies I've ever watched!

Chocolatey

Since coming back home I've been taking a LONG break from sketching and pattern cutting and I hate myself for enjoying the comfort of being back home so much that the thought of spending my time usefully hasn't quite crossed my mind.

Nevertheless I've been going back to trying my hand at baking a Black chocolate cake with Chocolate buttercream frosting...

My baking basics. Dad got me a giant can of baking powder when I got back without knowing that I usually need no more than 2 teaspoons for each time I bake.

My substitute for Buttermilk that was called in the recipe I found online. I combined Vinegar and whole milk.

Love cocoa powder!

The batter. I wanted to drink it all right there on the spot haha.

For some reason my cakes always crack and turn out deformed...

Well after frosting I didn't have any other thing to decorate my cake with... So i took a cadbury bar of button chocolates and cut each button in half and spreaded them around the cake. Then a kitkat bar that I broke in half to stick in the middle... My dad was saying it looked like the Stonehenge sheesh...

My very own piece of cake. I was particularly glad the frosting looked very clean on top of the cake.

And since my blog has been such a bore lately... Here's one of my outfit that i matched on a lazy sunny day...

Soft Colours and Drapes

While randomly flipping through Style.com and a few of my favourite collections from Resort 2010, I found Moschino using soft colours and lightweight fabric at the same time. Since coming back to Malaysia the weather has been so hot and humid that light fabric is all I can think about.

My favourite is this colour combination... Nude and black... Obviously 'cause I used a similar colour pallete for my fashion show garment 2 months ago hehe.

I love love this simple dress. It's got a beautiful drape on one shoulder and the fabric is so light and lovely I wish I had one to wear right now!

Again Im in love with the colour pallete!

These baggy genie pants seem to be everywhere lately. I haven't tried one myself because I thought i would look weird... but they seem really comfortable! Perfect for a long flight.

Max Azria also caught my eye because of their loose and tight concept... Using plenty of stretch fabric and light colours.

Loving the details on the sleeves and how loose it is on the top yet tight around the hips.

A little white dress with very subtle drape details.

I really love the white shirt. It's a very see-through fabric but drapes nicely over the body... I found a beautiful shirt like this from Zara a few weeks ago but it was pricey so I didn't get it... instead I went to the fabric store and bought 1 metre of cloth that's still in my luggage... Will attempt to make a similar shirt soon with my fingers crossed haha.

Amazing Photoshoots!!!

While my course has officially come to an end this term... I dug up some of the awesome photoshoots my group did for our fashion magazine project...

Since we were all on tight budget we used our own group members to model...

This girl is a born model and she's got super legs and a fresh looking face and even her voice is sexy! I love her photos... these two are the best in my opinion and she's aspiring to become a more professional model.

This photoshoot was for an ad for the brand UNCONDITIONAL. If im not mistaken it's they're spirng/summer 2009 collection and they look so good! Make-up and all done by students too.

This girl is an aspiring dancer... She's got the longest legs in the world (quote from Confessions of a Shopaholic movie haha) ... and because of her we got the best photoshoots among the rest of the group!

I love this girl too... She's very young... 19 if not mistaken... rebellious and sporting and unbelievably photogenic!

Now for the worst of our photoshoots...

My group wanted me to do one for a H&M ad in conjunction with the all new Matthew Williamson collection... So I had on the bikini and thankfully a retro printed kaftan...

As you can see I insisted on wearing the sunglasses because MY FACE SUCKS and I have a thing about eyebags that even Photoshop would have a major breakdown trying to edit.

We had a hard time trying to find the proper location to shoot because the air was cold and windy and I was dying from the chill while trying to pose like Im having the time of my life in a bikini and kaftan!!!

Nevertheless I think the photos turned out better than I expected thanks to the sunglasses!

I will be going back to Malaysia for holidays in a week! Shall be on the look out for interesting Asian styles and hopefully be brave enough to ask them to let me take their pictures for my blog. Hehe!

Knee-High

I'm often daunted to try styles that I could never see myself in before....

One of which are Knee-High socks that are popular especially among Lolita fashion styles but lately hitting the runways, highstreet stores and matched in so many different ways that it doesn't appear 'Lolita-ish' anymore.

Well to be honest I saw this womanin the train station... probably around her late 30s... fit as a fiddle and wearing a knitted jumper with long black linen skirt that reached right above her knee, and yes she had on a pair of knee-high socks. People might have thought that her style of dressing was wayyyy too flashy for her age but I thought she pulled it off nicely!

So I was like heck... if that woman was brave enough to wear her knee-high socks at that age I should be showing mine off while im still 18.

So I went to my room and rummaged my sock drawer and pulled out a pair of knee-high socks that I only wore with my boots during the winter six months ago... And I couldn't wait to see what clothes I had in my closet that I could mix them with for today's meeting with my friends at college.

Okay I took these photos in my college toilet because believe it or not I had no decent position in my room to take a full length photo without capturing a messy background.... Plus there was no full length mirror in my room.

So to crop out the toilet bowl, basin, dustbin and tissue roll on the floor... I photoshopped my images...

I'm currently in love with pairing a formal looking blazer with more casual pieces... I often pair it with jeans skirt and trousers... But this time i found this knitted grey dress I had in my closet that i thought would go well with the knee-high socks... The blazer came to my mind instantly and to my surprise this is the first time I mixed a new style so quickly.

And the moment I walked into college my group mates sent me praises about the outfit... I now believe I will be wearing knee-high socks as often as my new blazer obsession.

London makes me want to try new styles all the time... If I ever do meet that woman who I assume is in her 30s at the train station again, I'm gonna smile at her and tell her she looked awesome in knee-high socks.

Final Fashion Show

Updating my blog and balancing college work is like so difficult for me although tonnes of students out there seem to be able to do it!!! Sheesh...

Well the Fashion show has come and gone... I'm excited to post photos of other students' work here. It's a wide variety as we all have different point of views and some are experienced, some aren't, its like a multiculture cascade of garments walking down the runway.

I arrived early at college with my sis, who was to model my garment. My make-up artist got her friends to help with the awesome hair I wanted my sister to have.

I was superbly happy... Her make-up turned out exactly the way I imagined it.

Final touch-ups before the runway! I swear my sis looked so different compared to when she first walked into my college with her droopy eyes.

I didn't manage to capture every model that walked down the runway... I was clicking away on my camera so quickly that I felt it vibrate under all the action haha. Nevertheless these are my favesss...

I know the student who made the white dress and I was feeling the texture on her skirt for an hour in class. She spent endless hours on it and it looked so amazing on the runway.

I absolutely adored the peachy coloured garment on the right. I would love to wear those flowy volumized trousers... She looked like a goddess!

Drawings and My Garment Progression

More life drawings from class...

This is actually one of my classmate who volunteered to model for us. Drawing done with white chalk on black paper.

Here's a brief update on how my fashion show garment is coming along.

We were required to do a toile (draft) of our dress with cheap fabric to make sure our patterns would fit properly before making it with our expensively bought fabric.

In the midst of sewing up the toile of my dres...

Oh shoot I just realised this photo has a good 3/4 view of my miserable cereal dinner on the left.

My sister trying on the toile... Have not sewn in the sleeves at that moment.

The original colour will still be black and gold using lycra fabric... If i have enough time i would like to do some embellishments on the front part...

Oh yes my sister will be modelling my garment during the graduate fashion show. And im dying to sew on those little label things they always do on the back top of a garment... I just have a problem with deciding what name i would like to call my own brand (If i ever have one). Suggestions?

Drawings and Back in London

Some of the drawings I did in Studio class... We had to draw shoes and one of my classmate had a most interesting polka-dot boot that I couldn't resist to start on my paper...

I did some collage work using black paper, then gauche paint and chalk to detail the lighting reflected on the boot.

The Converse shoe in front was my friend's worn out shoe... and the Suede boots behind was my favourite Aldo pair! :)

One of our studio classes gave us an interesting project... That was to draw the process of unravelling a Kinder Egg. Each of us were required to buy our own little egg... sit it in any position we like on the table and draw it out.

My first sheet of paper displaying the process of the Kinder Egg still wrapped up... and slowly being opened to show the chocolate inside.

The chocolate egg is spilt open.

And inside it was a.... toy car.

I know I expected something cuter like a little animal figure or something... My friends had sheeps and penguins but I got a car?

Enough drawings... Sis and I went to chill at Starbucks first thing last weekend when i arrived at London...

And went for lunch with my coursemate...

I will be making the toile of my fashion show garment soon... It'll will be the first ever proper garment (It's a body-hugging dress) I'm going to make so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't fail doing the one thing I plan to do as a future career =S

Some Homework & Frappuccinos!!!

I am still not satisfied with the name of my blog... I really hated the previous one and it didn't sound witty at all. The current name and banner I am using now will be changed as soon as possible!!! Any suggestions???

My course will be having a graduate Fashion Show towards the end of May this year and each student was required to submit 2 final design ideas from our term 2 project. The judging panel will then select one design that they thought would be more suitable on the runway... And since most of us have no sewing and pattern-making experience, the tutors have to make sure our design are possible to make and not too ambitious.

I submitted the following two designs:

This second design was of course the one I wanted to do... And I already suspected that the tutors would choose this design to be made.... and I was right!

Our homework for the Easter Break was to draft out the pattern for our garment design. It took me a total of five hours to get it right... At least i THINK it is right...

I bought this book while i was in London from Amazon at a good price to help me out. The final garment I will make for the fashion show means a lot to me and I don't want it to look somewhat amateur... Although I really am anyway.

My final pattern for the bodice part of my design. If there's anyone here with pattern-making knowledge please comment and tell me if something looks terribly awkward?

The past few days have been so satisfying because I had adequate supply of Frappuccinos from Starbucks and Coffee Bean!!!

No I did not drink the two frappuccinos myself!!! My bf had a surprisingly big frappuccino appetite too and he probably never realized how addictive they were until I came back from London craving frappuccinos.

I have this habit of digging up the whipped cream and loving the taste of it melting in my mouth.

Illustrations

I have been trying to improve my Fashion Illustration techniques and compositions lately... So before I came back to Malaysia for the short Easter break I got this beautiful Daler Rowney sketchbook in A4 size. Sketchbooks in London are so cheap and they got budget art shops where you can easily get art supplies at half price!

Since i had no model who would pose for me i had to rely on interesting photographs and drew them out in my own way. I'm still trying to get the whole face proportions right.

I did this using charcoal, poster paint, marker pens, oil pastel, 4 red flower petals that I collected from my house garden and loads of tissue papers.

I learned to use different coloured papers to create interesting backgrounds in our illustrations from college... For this one the model supposed to be leaning against a brown brick wall which I substituted using paper and allowed half the model's silhouette to overlap.

Again I used charcoal (my favourite media since i started college), watercolour pencils with water and Indian Ink.

I did this Illustration based on one of my favourite Marc Jacob's piece from his amazing Fall 2009 RTW Collection.

Back With a New Look

My blog went dead after I left for London last year in September... Things got really hectic but I am now ready and hopeful to have a fresh start on my blog again.

To kick things off... A few photos just to show what I have been doing in London College of Fashion.

Sis and me along Oxford Street. I can't believe my fringe was so long and my hair was so short when we took this photo last year.

I will most likely be spending my next 3 years studying in this college! =)

Since I started this course my life drawing has improved trmendously... We had weekly life drawing classes, another day just for design, another day photography, another day cultural studies and an additional Computer Imaging class that was one of my favourite.

This is one of my favourite drawings as i spent about 90 minutes concentrating on getting the proportions and texture right.

I'm currently back in Malaysia for the 3 week Easter break and will be flying off to London again within 2 weeks time. So I don't have all my fashion design portfolio work with me at the moment but when i get back I'll try to keep this blog alive!!!

Oh and I've cut my fringe real short... I did it myself because I wanted a fresh new look and it took me days to make sure it was levelled. I hope the next time i get a proper stylist to do my hair they won't notice how unprofessionally done my fringe is...
